LOOKING AFTER NUMBER ONE, TODAY AND ALWAYS

HEALTHY EATING Eating well is important for all of us. In the short-term, it can help us to feel good, look our best and stay at a healthy weight. And in the long-term, a healthy, balanced diet can reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers. But what exactly is a healthy, balanced diet?

In simple terms, to eat a balanced diet you need to combine several different types of foods - from each of the main food groups - in the right amounts so your body gets all the nutrients it needs while maintaining a healthy weight.

This means you should eat:

** Plenty of bread, rice potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods

** Plenty of fruit and vegetables

** Some milk, cheese and yoghurt

** Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein

** Just a small amount of foods and drinks high in fat and/or sugar (Acknowledgment - Health Promotion, Eire)

AVOID SMOKING It increases the risk of cancer of the lungs and causes other breathing problems.

DRUGS Taking drugs is not cool. it starts with the first experimentation and later becomes addictive. Its effects destroys lives and can lead to death, Don't fall to peer pressure - It's cool to be sane and different.

MENTAL HEALTH Every single one of us will experience tough times in our lives. When we do, share your feelings with a friend or family member. Suffering in silence worsens the situation. Early intervention helps.

WELLNESS It is important to get the work-life balance right. There is increasing stress in the workplace but remember the work will go on without you. Avoids burn out - exercise, socialise, take a holiday. No one is irreplaceable. Look after number one's health.

SEXUAL HEALTH Having, active enjoyable and healthy sex is an important part of life for many people, young, old, and middle aged. Looking after your sexual health is an essential part of an enjoyable sex life. Protect yourself from infections at all times. Use the condom.

OBESITY - AVOID EXCESSIVE WEIGHT It is not a sign of wealth. It causes heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, cancer of the lining of the womb

YOUR DOCTORS, NURSES AND YOU Seek explanation in simple English what the problem is (diagnosis), what investigations and treatment options are available as well as the side effects and risks of the proposed treatment or operation. It is your body and it is within your rights to request these information.

FAITH, MEDICINE AND YOUR HEALTH God gave healthcare practitioners the skills and knowledge they possess. There is no where in any faith book that stipulates that God says one should not go to hospital. Doctors and Nurses care, God heals. Please seek help from hospitals when you are unwell or notice any departure from your normal health. Delayed treatment results in poor outcomes.
