Today, I read in a UK newspaper that amputations of legs, due to the effects of diabetes, has risen to 135 a week. Five of these amputations could have been prevented. Amputations restrict one's abilities and poses great psychological problems. Half of the people who lose a limb die within two years and most do not survive five years.
Obesity (being over-weight) is linked to diabetes and diabetes is responsible for problems with the legs that then result in the need to cut off the leg or legs.(Source - Diabetes UK).
Diabetes can also damage the kidneys and eyes.
Being overweight is not a sign of affluence but indulgence. We need to change our lifestyle through exercise and healthy diet. Eating five portions of fruit a day and taking less sugar is a starting point. Please consult your doctor or dietician if you think you require some help.
